HOW TO CLEAN THE GLASS DOOR OF A WOOD BURNING STOVE ECOLOGICALLY

Winter is here, and with that comes the pleasure of sitting by the fire with a nice book and a cup of hot chocolate but also comes another extra job to do around the house.

It is nice to sit by the fireplace and lose oneself staring at the fire …..well it would….., if only…. one could see the fire through the glass door. Ok time to have a go cleaning it without any chemicals.

This method was given to me by an older member of my family. To him a very grateful thanks.

TIME TO CLEAN

BE PREPARED TO GET VERY MESSY.

MATERIALS - Plenty of water - a lot of old rugs (time to use that old t-shirt full of holes)

NOTE I find it easy to clean it early in the morning when the door glass is still warmish and the ash is still warm (never do it when the door is still hot or when the ash is hot )

Removing the black from the glass

STEP 1 - Get a piece of cloth and get it damp, not wet.

I TEND TO GET THE ASH FROM THE SIDES OF THE FIREPLACE NEVER FROM THE MIDDLE. FROM THE MIDDLE IS TOO HOT BUT FROM THE SIDES IT IS WARM.

STEP 2 - With the damp cloth just touch the ash gently in order to get some ash to attach itself to the damp cloth.

STEP 3 '- This is where the messy bit starts. Very gently start cleaning the glass, the way you fill comfortable either in circles or up and down. Keep dipping into the ash until the cloth is so dirty you can not use it anymore and throw it away.

STEP 4 - Get a clean cloth (no point to rinse the old one) and start again from step 1 to 3. Do as many times as needed

REMOVING THE ASH FROM THE GLASS

STEP 1 - Get a clean cloth get wet it and wipe the glass (you will have to do it several times). P.S if the cloth gets very dirty use another one.

STEP 2 - Once all the glass is clean give one last wipe with a clean damp cloth and buff it dry.

It sounds very laborious but is a very quick job. The trick is to give it a wipe every morning and not let it get so dirty as this one did.

FYI - Try to use good dry wood in order to prevent the glass to get dirty quickly.
